MoneyHelp is improving 'financial literacy' in young people

MoneyHelp: A financial education course for students in Year 9, 10 and above

A4e believes that improving financial education at a young age can play a significant role in improving these statistics, which is why A4e has developed this programme to raise the financial capability of students and help schools provide links into national diplomas and job opportunities in the financial services sector.

This programme provides important financial education for Year 9 – 12 students notably those from age 13 upwards by delivering an understanding of life and work-based situations. The programme aims to:

• Increase awareness of personal financial planning and help students open and manage a bank account
• Raise awareness of longer term saving and pension schemes
• Provide a basis for study and obtaining further information
• Help understand different methods of plastic and how to avoid potential financial difficulties
• Boost understanding of the Financial Services Sector as a source of employment opportunities and the attendant qualifications to enable progression.

A4e strongly believes that financial exclusion has the potential to effect people from all walks of life. The programme content is relevant to students of all ages from across the whole community.

Initial feedback has been very strong:

“The financial advisor that we were lucky to have was really informative and very helpful. I learned a lot about how to save my money and the different technical names that banks use. All in all I am really glad to have had the financial advisor as I’m now much wiser in how to save my own money; I definitely will not be needing my mum as my personal bank account anymore!”
Delali Kotutse. Year 10 Student. St Anne’s

"A4e has formed a strong partnership with ourselves to facilitate the delivery of their MoneyHelp programme into Enfield Schools. The programme challenges the students and develops their financial capability and skills. Feedback shows that the students are benefiting from this exposure. A4e has shown flexibility in fitting their delivery schedule into the various school timetables."
Martyn Caswell. Development Officer. Enfield Local Authority

“Banking terms and jargon can be confusing, so throughout January and February year 10 and year 11 completed a 3 week course on personal finance. The workshops set out to explain what’s what in everyday language and give basic grounding in financial management. This sort of knowledge is key to being able to take control of your money properly – not only now but especially in the future once you’re earning a salary.”
Areti Woods. Business & Enterprise Co-ordinator. St Anne’s
