Fit 4 Employment

A4e has been working with the support of Construction Skills to deliver a programme, Fit4Employment, which encourages young people to choose a career in the sector.

Fit 4 Employment offers a robust awareness-raising and engagement tool to produce better informed and enthusiastic young people for the local construction labour market. Across a two-week accredited scheme, pupils find out more about the construction industry, gain relevant skills and develop an understanding of the wide variety of career opportunities available, from manual to professional.

The project has two main elements;

1) An initial week which will include activities promoting team work, identifying skills required by employers and an introduction to the wide range of career opportunities within the construction sector
2) The students who successfully complete their first week will be offered the chance to undertake a second week of training which will be specifically construction based, including practical exercises, the importance of Health & Safety and a visit to a construction site

The combined fortnight will offer an appropriate part qualification along the lines of Career Planning / Preparation For Employment. This will ensure that even if a beneficiary does not want to pursue a career in the construction industry they will still have useful, transferable certification as evidence for further education, training or employment. Those who successfully complete Week 2 and wish to continue beyond the life of the available funding will progress to a third stage which involves an on-site work trial with one of a number of local construction firms.

The intention is that should the participants prove themselves to be suitably equipped; the companies will offer them an employment or training opportunity. Alternatively, those completing week 2 of Fit 4 Employment will be referred to an appropriate training scheme or local initiative to gain further skills and qualifications. Through working closely with schools, the project will aim to ensure a balance of competencies across the pupils on the programme, and will also encourage participation from girls and pupils from black minority ethnic groups.

At the start of the project, the Fit 4 Employment Coordinator will visit schools and give a presentation to pupils and teachers about the project, which will emphasise that the construction industry is open to everyone. It is worth noting that during the second year of previous projects, the percentage of girls taking part rose to 11% which is well above the percentage of females working in the construction industry regionally, currently estimated at less than 3%.

The benefits of the Fit 4 Employment Project can be summarised as follows:
For Pupils
• Knowledge of construction industry and employment opportunities
• Enhanced employability skills relevant to construction industry
• Opportunity for direct work experience within construction industry
• Opportunity for Apprenticeship and vocational training.
