The Diploma Lowdown
The aim of Diploma Lowdown is to improve the understanding of the new diplomas amongst all education-business links stakeholders – Heads, teachers, governors, employers and employees.
The far-end outcome is to showcase the career opportunities within the IT, Health & Social Care, Engineering, Creative Media and Construction industries and increase the staff responsible for activity delivery’s confidence and awareness of their subject matter. In addition to the five pilot diploma areas, this project also includes Manufacturing and Business Admin & Finance.
The project provides an adequate ‘bridge’ to show both sectors how their improved involvement with one another can both meet the government’s vocational education agenda and the local skills shortages in seven diploma areas.
The activity will have two main stands:
• Marketing & information sessions for the education sector
• Company visits for teachers
Strand 1 – Marketing to schools
As schools prepare to deliver the new diplomas, there is a surfeit of information out there as to their structure, format and outcomes.
However, it is a priority for this scheme to produce both written material and staff-led presentations that focus on the need to involve employers from a local perspective.
A ‘Lowdown’ booklet has been produced featuring case studies that highlight how those businesses can support schools in their delivery.
Strand 2 – Company visits
A4e link teachers responsible for their delivery with local firms from the five sectors to undertake some flexible visits to improve their understanding of the key issues involved.
The project co-ordinator brokers a ‘contract’ between the company and the teacher to ensure that there are tangible outcomes from the relationship which may take the form of part- or full-day release over a number of weeks, a intensive two- or three-day block or any version that is suitable for both parties.
We place teachers in each subject area and, where necessary, backfill costs will be paid to the schools and businesses to ensure that they are not burdened by financial loss as a result of their involvement.
